The Ceremony for Cultural Awards for the Promotion of Buddhism

These two awards have been established to recognize and praise those who have contributed to the promotion of Buddhism and Buddhist culture through their various national and international activities. The committee of Bukkyō Dendō Kyōkai will annually select two people and present them with a gift and honorarium.


The awardees shall be selected from the following categories:


The Cultural Award for the Promotion of Buddhism

  1. Research, thesis, literary work, translation, field investigation,
  2. Literary arts, arts, music, critique, etc.
  3. Missionary work, practice of the Dharma, etc.

The Award for Distinguished Service for the Promotion of Buddhism will be presented by recommendation from the committee of Bukkyō Dendō Kyōkai.

Rev. Takamaro Shigaraki BUNKA-SHŌ(A)

Rev. Takamaro Shigaraki

Born in Hiroshima in 1926. Has spent his career studying Pure Land Buddhism and clarified a contemporary meaning of Buddhism through looking into Shinran’s thought from a modern perspective.
Dr. Ahangamage Tudor Ariyaratne KŌRŌ-SHŌ

Dr. Ahangamage Tudor Ariyaratne

Born in Calle District, Sri Lanka in 1931. He developed the Sarvodaya movement whose activities now followed throughout the world are based on Buddhist philosophy for the cultivation and advancement of agrarian communities.

Mr. Kenichi Sakuma BUNKA-SHŌ (B)

Mr. Kenichi Sakuma

Born 1921in Kyoto prefecture; painted renown “Gassho-Doji” (Children Praying in Gassho) Series sharing the message of the Buddha’s compassion.
Rev. Kanritsu Asuka KŌRŌ-SHŌ

Rev. Kanritsu Asuka

Born 1915 in Toyama prefecture; has devoted his life to the research and promoting of Buddhist music.”
